Gilding Academy

We just wanted to give you a little peek into our world of gilding from our Master Gilding Course we had on July 23rd. It was a small yet incredibly vibrant group of just two students – Kathleen from China and Hiromi from Japan.

First up, we had Kathleen from China. She’s been eager to learn about our gilding techniques and is always ready to dive into the world of gold leafing. And then there was Hiromi from Japan, who’s not just any student – she’s a famous artist! We’ve had the privilege of working with her on several fascinating projects over the past three years.

During her stay, Hiromi discovered an unexpected treasure—an abandoned, large oval tabletop discarded on the street. Most people would see junk, but Hiromi? She saw a blank canvas for her next masterpiece.

Our very own Karl stepped in to teach them a special technique on how to lay the gold leaf randomly. This technique is particularly effective when working on circular bases, and we used it on a round frame for one of Hiromi’s previous projects.

Here’s where things got even more exciting: Kathleen and Hiromi teamed up to create Hiromi’s artwork together. It was a joint effort, a fantastic fusion of their skills and creativity. It was an amazing collaborative effort adding much depth to the Masterclass curriculum.

The entire week was filled with fun, laughter, and lots of learning. We were all engrossed in each other’s company, sharing stories and experiences. It was a truly memorable week that reminded us of why we love doing what we do.

So here’s to Kathleen and Hiromi, to teamwork, and to the joy of creating gold leaf art. Can’t wait for more such inspiring classes!
